Some of My Favorite Writing Resources Part One

Write or Die
-This is a great site for getting some speedy writing done. It challenges you to write a certain amount of words for a certain amount of time that you choose. You can also choose Consequences: gentle, normal,  kamikaze, electric shock mode and a Grace period: forgiving, strict, and evil. It's a amazing way to get some words down on paper.

EditMinion
-With edit minion all you have to do is paste your writing into the box and hit a button. From there the system checks for adverbs, weak words, cliches, said replacements, passive voice, and often misspelled words.

Inkpop
- Inkpop is an online writing community run by HarperCollins. On this site you can upload short stories, poems, essays, and novels for people to read and critique. If they like it, they will add your story to their watch list. The more people who watch it, the higher it goes up the charts. Every month the top five pieces of work are read by the people at HarperCollins and given a review. If the editors like your story enough, they may contact you and ask to publish your book.

Behind the Name
- This is actually one of the very first writing sites that I found and joined. Behind the Name is a really nice name website. They have a program called the Random Renamer which gives you a variety of options to choose what names you would like. Behind the Name also has many different Message Boards including a Writing Room. In the Writing Room, users can chat and ask questions about their stories and play more then a few writing games.

750 Words
- The only way to write better is to write more, right? What better way to do it then writing about anything and everything with stickers along the way? 750 Words challenges you to write 750+ words a day everyday.

Seventh Sanctum
- Need a new name for a character, place, food, or drink? Or do you just need a writing warm up or challenge? At seventhsactum.com you can find "random renamers" for any of these things. You can even create your own (Not quite sure how that works, but all the same, it's still cool)

Celebrating Entering Pottermore with Fireworks

I did it! I got into Pottermore at 12:08 PM today after refreshing the page for almost five hours, not counting the two after midnight this morning. Sorry to those who haven't gotten in yet. Don't give up! You still have two more days!  And to celebrate, I posted some fireworks on YouTube, but you can view them here!

Real Life Characters: Obsessions

Every single person has hobby or obsession. In fact, most people have more then a few. All to many times we see characters that are kind of dull and lifeless. Most of the time it is because they have no or very few hobbies. They can be flat and one sided, not very interesting.

Let's compare who sounds more interesting.

Matthew lives in Kansas City. He works for an agency that sells copyright licenses and in his free time likes to watch T.V. He doesn't do much else or like much else for that matter.

V.S.

Kaycee lives in San Francisco. She works at a local coffee shop and is currently attending a college of art and design. In her free time she plays volleyball at the beach and hangs out with her friends. She is obsessed with Van Gogh and Pretty Little Liars on ABC Family even though she's not much of a T.V. person. Kaycee has written a little poetry, but doesn't think it is very good. Before she goes to work in the morning, she likes to practice yoga in her living room.

See what I mean? Who would you rather hang out with- Matthew or Kaycee. Giving your characters personalities, obsessions, hobbies, the little tidbits that make their lives different from everyone else's can make a person's writing so much more interesting. You never know. You may find something out about your character that you never knew before. Or, your story may come to life in ways you never imagined.

I wrote this because I am needing to pass the time. One of my obsessions is Harry Potter and I still haven't gotten into Pottermore yet. Wish me luck!!

P.S. While I'm waiting, I'll get some book reviews up on my book review page... =)
